Well, we’ve had the busiest February since we arrived in 2002. Spanish Highs Mountain guides have been working hard at the winter mountaineering and alpine courses and ascents of Mulhacen recently. I seem to have been demoted to “office boy” and whilst others have been out doing all the “mountain” fun things, I’ve been running to/from Malaga airport, sorting out gear, equipment and accommodation issues, as well as keeping the flow of clients coming in!
Anyway now that March is here, things are not as manic. We have had time to clear a new terrace for crops and have planted potatoes, onions and habas (beans). Broccoli and cauliflowers are to follow soon.
The land is looking very green after all the rain we have had since 2009 arrived on the scene. This is both good and bad. Good for the growth of the new crops, bad as we have 3ft high weeds on some of the terraces! Furthermore, I have hurt my right elbow splitting logs (seriously, this is no excuse) so cannot work the strimming machine.
We have had some strong wind recently together with good snowfall in the mountains. The photo below was taken of Lanjaron from the Tajos de Colorado opposite the town and shows the wind blowing spindrift off the mountains and into the Rio Lanjaron.
The dogs are loving the cool of the winter and we are taking them up to the mountain snows tomorrow. Some photos below.
